Emergency Dental Office in Atlanta

Emergency dental offices differ from regular dental practices in some very important ways. Many keep longer hours. Most of them take walk-in patients. Many more keep staff on call when they close their doors for the night or weekend. Some emergency dental practices in populated areas operate on a 24-hour basis.
All emergency dental practices aim to give timely treatment whenever it is needed. Though different practices operate under different schedules, they all offer a common set of services. Here is what you should know about the average emergency dental office.
A regular dental practice is not always the best option in an emergency
Most people are familiar with the processes involved in dental care. A patient makes an appointment, goes in for a procedure and leaves the dentist’s office, probably with a date and time for a follow-up appointment.
A busy dental practice that follows this model will not always have the time, the room or an available dentist to take a walk-in patient. Therefore, dental practices that do offer emergency dental care on a walk-in basis operate a little differently.
What should you expect from a practice that offers emergency dentistry?
For starters, it stays open for long hours, which reduces patient backlog. This allows people that have 9 to 5 jobs to see the dentist after-hours. This, in turn, frees up daytime hours for walk-in patients with dental emergencies. Most of these practices tend to be conveniently located in places that are easily accessible to most people from surrounding areas.
Second, such practices tend to put their staff on a shift system to ensure availability and avoid overworking them. They may also vary the number of staff present in the office depending on the time of day. During the busiest hours, the practice will have more staff.
Lastly, the practice will always have one or two staff members on-call, even when everyone goes home. The person on standby fields emergency calls and gives patient advice about first aid. If need be, the person on call arranges for the patient to receive immediate dental treatment at the practice.
What services does an emergency dentist offer?
The job of an emergency dentist is to provide urgent dental care and provide relief from pain, injury or infection. Many times, a person who receives emergency dental care can go home without needing any future work. Other times, the emergency dentist is forced to refer the patient for specialized treatment, either immediately or at a later date. Typical services available at an emergency dental practice include the following:
- Reattachment of knocked-out teeth
- Dental restorations for injured or decayed teeth
- Replacement of old, lost or damaged restorations
- Orthodontics repair
- Denture repair
- Tooth extraction
